Northern California Coast v0
Green areas show where redwoods could naturally grow based on:
- Wet season rainfall ≥ 20 inches (PRISM)
- Nighttime fog ≥ 80 days/season (GOES-16)
- North of San Simeon (35.6°N)
v0 Notes:
- Fog detection uses nighttime-only data (11pm-5am PST)
- BTD threshold 1.0 K (empirically calibrated with ground truth)
- Multi-year climatology: 2020-2024 (140 sample days, 5 years)
- Perfect validation suggests nighttime fog correlates with habitat
Future v1: Daytime fog detection for direct "fog past noon" measurement
Data Sources:
• Rainfall: PRISM 800m normals
• Fog: GOES-16 BTD (Ch13-Ch7)
• Time Period: 2020-2024 (140 days over 5 years)
• Resolution: 800m
